Scott's Last Expedition at the Natural History Museum ~ and Kensington Hotels Offers

If you are intending visiting the Natural History Museum during your London visit you will have the opportunity to see the museum's evocative exhibition on Scott's Last Expedition to Antarctica. Hailed as a hero, he died in heroic fashion in an endeavour that gripped the soul of the nation due to the dramatic and doomed nature of Captain Scott's fatal quest for the South Pole. Ultimately, it was the Norwegian Roald Amundsen who gained the “reward of priority” while the British attempt ended in failure. But it was a glorious failure - one that drew admiration, respect and sympathy for the scale of the effort and the enormity of the cost that these men paid with their frozen bodies.

The exhibition runs up to the 2nd of September, and as well as seeing many of the specimens and artifacts from the polar expedition there is also an amazing life-size recreation of Scott's hut which even to this day is still extant in Antarctica.

Visitors planning to go to see the museums in South Kensington can add value and convenience to their stay with one of our London hotel deals, and specifically with our main feature offer for this post .....

New London Theatre Hotels Deals

I stayed in a hotel in Glasgow last week at the invitation of a good friend. It was an hotel experience that after just one day left me wondering just how good a friend he was to me.

That's unfair, I know. He hadn't planned to place me in a carnival creation of mediocrity and inefficiency - but he had, and I am blaming him.

From my first steps into the welcoming foyer .... a moment now while my tongue twists in my mouth at the thought of the word 'welcome'..... I knew that matters promised to get a whole lot worse. I was not to be disappointed, and my expectations were fully rewarded in the bleakest possible sense.

No point going through a lengthy litany of dissatisfaction and astonishment at all that was wrong with this hotel.  If I were to do so it would merely be some form of catharsis whereby I could unburden my seared consciousness of its painful recollections. Actually, pre-senile dementia has one thing going for it ... the loss of memory for recent events. In the case of this unnamed hotel, such misfortune would be a blessing.

Glasgow has much to recommend it, but certainly not an hotel that would be classed as an atrocity against civilians if it were run by terrorists. I assume it's not.

Deep breath - and I am so very glad to be back in London. And although I can think of many cheap London hotels here, they are cheap in the way of price, not quality. Next time in Glasgow, I will be more discerning.

Swiftly then to our current feature offer where, as always, you can rely on finding an excellent hotel.

London's Museums

London has a bit of a reputation for high hotel prices - referring of course to good standard hotels as distinct from overnight warehouse-type accommodation trying to masquerade as real hotels. Visitors can be surprised to find that there are are some great discount London hotel deals available ..... there to be taken if you take the trouble to look.

Another surprise for tourists is that many of the city's principal tourists attractions - its grand museums - are completely free, with no admission charges. This is thanks to current government policies and a rejection of the old Thatcherite contempt that once existed for those who had to endure under the rule of rigid, fundamentalist Tory economics. Ah, yes. It had its day.

Thankfully now, there is no feeling of exclusion anymore and you can breeze your way through the treasures and impressive exhibits of National Gallery, the Tate Modern, the Natural History and the British Musuem.

There is so much to see, and with the exception of some special exhibits where you may have to pay a fee, all of this is for free. So much in fact, that you could easily wear yourself out and overdose on aesthetics. So don't expect to do it all in one day. Remember, you can come back again the next day and take things at your own pace.

This is especially the way to approach the formidable Victoria and Albert Museum. The scale here is vast, and its seven miles of corridors can put the best pair of limbs to the test.

Now, to the feature deal for hotels near King's Cross - ideal for those needing an overnight stop for mainline train connections .......
