Let's not forget that Valentine's Day is coming up. Does anyone know anymore whether it is Cupid or commercialism that drives us into an annual spree of exchanging gifts, flowers, chocolates and cards. Well, let's pretend it is that mysterious romantic side to us that somehow puts us under the influence ... and of course that has also become another feature, especially with the younger set.

I will do what I always do ... put the commercial end of it out of my mind and with a little old fashioned sentiment spend some thougthful moments getting a small gift for the one I love. If anything, Valentine's Day is just a little prompt to me on this one day every year to give a few moments of affectionate consideration to the special person in my life. It is simple in a sense, but it is the one bit of sense I can see in it. If someone else is making money on the back of my feelings, then so bit it. In the end, I am grateful that they reminded me to remember.

Many were more than a little amused by the warning to the public from West Yorkshire police due to the pending release of over 60 burglars prior to Christmas. Police advised that people should be vigilant and secure their properties with 64 individuals being released to residential addresses in the Leeds area.

What a statement, and what an admission of failure. People it seems should make prisoners of themselves in their homes to protect themselves from people who should be in prison. Why do I sometimes get the feeling that we are living our lives in a David Attenborough nature documentary. You know the type of thing - the one we've seen countless times - the African wildebeest is struggling along with his day as the voracious predator watches and finally strikes with the inevitable kill. Lets face it, as the public, we really only represent a vulnerable prey for predator criminals who attack us at will, and to their best advantage, and regardless of the cost to innocent victims.

But the strange thing is how the State is prepared to facilitate this. The extent of the crime problem and the numbers of victims seems to make no impression on our politicians - the only ones in a position to do something about it. Ever think of incremental sentencing ? A sentencing system where the more crime you do the more jail you do. Is it a difficult concept or what ? You are before the courts for your fortieth burglary, and it is treated the same as your first, second or third. How about adding on a year for every previous conviction of a similar type. It probably wouldn't make any difference to a criminals desire to rehabilitate, but it would mean that while they spend more time locked up in prison, they spend less time robbing.

Hark! I hear the cry of a pseudo liberal: "Prison does not work." And that is something I wouldn't even pause to debate. Except to say - well as an example - criminal X carried out 20 burglaries in 2010. He has spent all of 2011 in prison, and in that time he has not carried out any burglaries. Yep. That seems to work.

You see, there is always something here to cheer the festive mood. What would Christmas be without a smattering of insanity ? So there is your fix for the moment. Thanksgiving Day in London

Desperate boyfriend concocts desperately stupid plan to fool girlfriend - and fails gloriously

I am always amazed at the resourcefulness of people. The latest to impress me is a guy in Colarado who was cheating on his girlfriend, and had arranged for a girl he had met online to come to his apartment in the early hours at 3.00am. Naturally, he wasn't expecting his girlfriend to be around. Unfortunately for him, she arrived home early. Now, what to do with his online date just due to arrive?

Well, some people always know just what to do. To escape his predicament he phoned the police to report his date as a burglar who had intruded into his apartment.

It is obvious though that it was hardly a flawless plan - especially when the police started to interrogate the “burglar”. As expected, it all became undone, and that landed 24-year-old Kevin Gaylor in bother with the unimpressed police officers who responded to the false report. Luckily for him, the authorities were not too harsh, citing him with only a misdemeanor for false reporting to the police. The real punishment must certainly be how stupid he felt afterwards and whatever it was his girlfriend decided to do to him as a result.

Naturally, most people think of the leisure moments they can have in Regent's Park after the noise and the bustle of the busy streets - and that is true. It's lovely to relax in.

It could have been different. The London riots of some months back could have had a very negative affect on tourist numbers visiting London. Thankfully, most people can put these events into perspective, realising that such outbreaks of disturbance are to be expected anywhere and in any major city you might conceive of traveling to for a vacation. This week it was Rome which was the venerable venue for those spilling their bile against the perpetrators of corporate greed. And impressive stuff it was too with water cannon, tear gas, bottles, rocks, fireworks, burst-up shops and blazing cars.

Obviously, between corporate greed and violent rioting there is both right and wrong. But perspective, as I mentioned earlier, may colour your view of where the real blame lies. One perspective that I found interesting during the London riots was the media commentator who told us, in firm tones, that we must remember that the rioters were, in fact, victims themselves.

Indeed. It was a moment where the nation stood properly corrected. Thank you again Ms. Whatsyourface, peerless expert in whatever it is you do.

However, I think most people's abiding memory will be that of the unfortunate Asian student who was set upon by a number of thugs ... sorry, victims ....... who robbed him of his remaining possessions while they acted under the pretense of trying to help him. Confused, bloodied and bewildered following an earlier attack by an unknown victim or gang of victims, thousands who viewed the widely publicised video clip were shocked at the meanness and sheer badness of what some individuals were capable of towards a vulnerable young man.

Happily, it is now all consigned to the past. Visitors to the capital need not concern themselves unduly about being caught up in chaotic riots. Everything is back to normal, and the daily mundane vicissitudes of routine, everyday crime. Just take the usual sensible precautions you would take in any big city to keep yourself and your property safe from any predatory victims who might try to target you.

And don't you sometimes feel that words have lost all sense of meaning? I can't think why.

So Heathrow, with which we all can have a bit of a love-hate relationship depending on the mood, can be a positive beacon of light and welcoming warmth on certain occasions. And this was one of them. I was just glad to be back.

But back in Heathrow didn't mean a straight rush home. In fact, I needed to hang around for some little time for a scheduled rendezvous with a fellow colleague who was due to travel out later in the day. So encumbered with my baggage - not really, I traveled light - I hared it over to the Hilton London Heathrow Airport to catch my friend as early as I could, and hopefully leave as early as possible when business was concluded.

Well, nothing goes to plan. My colleague hadn't arrived yet, or was I early perhaps. Anyway, the upshot was I had to hang around for a bit. This wasn't such a bad thing as it turned out. The Hilton here in Heathrow is quite a pleasant place to while away some time. There is nothing fussy or mock pretentious that will jar with the notion to have some relaxing moments in a welcoming atmosphere - one that seems to be a world away from the bruising bustle of an airport terminal. Yet, in truth, it is not a world away. If you needed convenience to the terminals at Heathrow, you couldn't be more conveniently placed.

And the food - and the drink. Did I mention that there are three fine restaurants to choose from, each of them excellent. Well one is good enough for me, and so it was Oscar's that did the needful in the shape of a truly delicious Italian style pasta dish. The wine was a necessary and exquisite touch.

Sometimes airport hotels can be a little soulless, but here in the Hilton Heathrow they seem to have got things just right. Not only is the place packed with services and facilities, it's got that uplifting ambiance that keeps your spirits alight when they might otherwise sag with boredom. Let's face it - waiting around can do that to you, even in the best of settings. But not here in the Hilton, I think.

Really, I'm not going to be too disappointed if I am caught in similar circumstances in the future. Latecomers can be a their ease, I thought, as I savoured the last fork-full of creamy pasta. I am in no rush.

Yes. I think that I will be quite content if again I am put through the 'inconvenience' of a delay in Heathrow. I will know that I can leisurely bide my time at a good hotel while I wait for things to get back on track - and that could be the Hilton or, indeed, Jurys Inn Heathrow Airport which is another excellent airport hotel.

I know that delays are all part of the discomfort of air travel, but sometimes you've just got to embrace the pain. And in my experience that's best done in the comfort of a good hotel where you can take succour with a hearty meal and a consoling drink.

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

I was heading down towards Earls Court this morning, and Austrian Niko Alm jumped into my mind. Niko is a 'pastafarian' and the guy who succeeded in convincing authorities to allow a photo to appear on his driving licence which shows him wearing his religious headgear - a pasta strainer.

Niko is an avowed atheist and member of the US based Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a requirement of which demands that he wears the pasta sieve. The church's central dogma demands that its members reject all dogma.

I can't say I ever encountered anything of the like specifically relating to spaghetti within my own religion, although I do have some vague recollection of a hymn called Pasta Angelicus echoing back to me from my pious childhood.

The devoted pastafarian made his unusual application for a driving licence after Austrian rules accepted the wearing of confessional headgear by applicants in photos provided for official purposes. The Austrian police duly issued Mr.Alm with a laminated card depicting him wearing his religious pasta strainer.

I don't know why, but this likeable oddball made a good start to my day, and left me grateful for those little moments when something meaningful comes pleasantly into your life. Off in a hack to Mayfair, and with good reason

It's as I always thought, and the hacking scandal only goes to prove it - journalists are a strange breed. In what other profession do you get such a chasm of polar opposites. At their best journalists are among the finest, idealistic, high-minded, genuine people - altruistic, sincere, honest, caring and often courageous and of impeccable integrity. But alas ..... there are the others.

If the popular belief still holds that prostitutes occupy the basest profession, then people have overlooked the vile individuals that occupy the most putrid levels of journalism. In truth, you would have to plummet deep into a mire of the densest cesspool to find just how low it is possible for some 'respected' journalists to sink.

Believe me, hacking wasn't the worst of it. Some of these people, in the search for headline sensation, have been responsible for the deaths of innocent people, deaths for which they were never called to account. They wrote their drivel, drew their money, and left other people to deal with the tragedy and suffering. The papers sold well.

It would have ben the right thing, it would have been the decent thing for those with responsibity and political power to intervene decades ago. It would have been right to demand standards, and it would have been right to ruthlessly deal with those in the media who confidently and casually ignored all standards.

It could have made a difference: an intervention on the side of what was right against those who felt they didn't need to worry about right as long as the could sell the lie and sell the paper at the same time. But the politicians chose not to confront, chose not to question and chose not to stick their necks out. Instead, they turned their gaze, whistled to the wind and pretended they didn't see what was happening when sections of the media perpetrated their most appalling excesses, and in doing so left each innocent victim of the media, past, future and present to their own devices. It was always the wrong choice, and I believe they made that choice out of fear. And in a way, I confess I understand why.

The whole thing is so depressing, I'm going to leave it there. Better by far to go in search of one of my favourite watering holes in illustrious Mayfair. That way, I can leave all that hacking annoyance behind me and I can concentrate instead on some really important and serious matters. My son wants a new iPad. It will cost, he says, about 500 US dollars. He says he needs it, and I can't see why. But then, how am I to really know? What to do?

My favourite Bin Laden Tweet

Following the recent death of Osama Bin Laden, I was avidly following the many posts on Twitter. As you can imagine, this one event caused a veritable avalanche of tweets. But the one that stood out for me went something like this: ' How come everyone is so happy that Osama Bin Laden is dead? Why? Was he a bad man?' The genius of this, of course, was that you couldn't quite know whether the person who made this 'tweet' was extremely stupid or extremely funny.

The other amusing aspect were the many people appearing on TV in far off Pakistan who emphatically argued that the US forces had not killed Osama, and that he, The Hero, was still very much alive and in military terms still a sleeping terrorist threat - a genuine case of “Not dead, but sleepeth”. Well, everyone to their own viewpoint, I suppose. Hell, anyway. Let's compromise on that one then: Isn't it possible that we all could agree on an epitaph such as “Not dead, but on the seabed.” I think we could all run with that, and I imagine it would be sufficiently accommodating for those who are still disinclined to believe that he is in fact dead.

The Tiger Green Brasserie at the Hilton Green Park

I was reflecting on this after another fine meal in one of Mayfair's many excellent restaurants - this time it was the Tiger Green Brasserie, a supremely good restaurant which is part of the Hilton London Green Park hotel. You can have your pick from a variety of absolutely wonderful food there, and I chose a delicately tasting fish dish of that type that falls in love with your palate and fills you with a sense of satisfaction that you would just love to share around. In fact, I'd be happy to even share it with old Osama, but I expect he is fed up with fish at this stage.

As I said I was reflecting, and now that I consider it, how often I diverge from my assigned duty to write about hotels. This post is a case in point which should be about the latest deals for Mayfair hotels? Yes. I ought to be writing about hotels, and what happens: Osama gets in the way, God bless him. I think my only excuse is that I'm suffering from an information overload from listening to too much news.

Very few delivered a performance which might remind you that this was a song contest, but France and Iceland tried.

On the more serious side of the contest, my vote for most shaftable contestant definitely goes to Lena from Germany. You don't need to sing, darling .......being there is enough. To which I can only add: Ich komme mein Liebling.

If we had sense we would call a halt to this Eurofarce with its predictable vote swapping arrangement. Sad. It used to have some credibility, and some good songs. It has little of either now since the inclusion of the former Soviet Bloc countries. Ok, Comrades. You win again.

The truth is that some people are just so full of themselves that they are barely aware - or are completely unaware - of the possibility that you might imagine yourself to be possessed of feelings that your opinions, your self-esteem, your view of your place in the world may be equal to and every bit as valid as theirs.

This particular individual has such an unshakeable belief in his own importance, and his natural right to have whatever there is to be had without considering anybody else, that I have recently taken to the view that he is suffering from a priority complex. You know the type of thing - someone leaves a bottle of wine in as a thank you for the staff, but he just assumes that he should be the first to have it ....... and he takes it! Or a box of chocolates - supposed to be shared, but snared by him instead.

I'm supposed to be writing about special offers for hotels near Hyde Park, but hump that for a minute. I'll get back to it later.

The point here is: isn't it fantastic, just fantastic, to escape from the overbearing, egotistical, irritating and tedious company of someone like my 'friend.'

And that is exactly what I did yesterday - I made a spectacular escape from him and fled to the fresh, wide and verdant spaces of Hyde Park. What freedom. What release. This was what it means to be at liberty. I was King and this was my Camelot, here in Hyde Park, for "one brief shining moment." Well, actually ..... it was for half an hour. I had to go back and meet up with him again. But it was great at the time. A lunch break on my own purchased with the excuse - lie - that I needed to run down to the travel agents about a cruise booking.

The good news is it will be another two months before I have to see him again.

My wife says I should be more understanding, especially if he is, as I say, suffering from a priority complex. Okay. I accept he is a sufferer. A victim, even. But still. It doesn't seem to work out too bad for him. Whatever is going, he always gets it - including the wine. ....... and the chocs.

I have to say the park and fly deals offered by some airport hotels look very attractive. Compared to the price you might have to pay for parking your car for the duration of a trip abroad, the charges from a hotel, that is usually coupled with a reasonable rate for accommodation, starts to look like a veritable kindness.

The overcharge alternative for some airport parking seems to underline the truth behind the saying that avarice is the spur of industry, and some of these companies aren't slow in sticking the spurs deep into the customer to extract the last extra penny they can force out of us.

This was mentioned to me by one lady out in Jurys Inn Hotel in Heathrow Airport where I was attending a meeting earlier this week . Instead of paying the silly prices, she was delighted with the deal she had got from Jurys which included one overnight stay for her flight the next morning, and parking at a discount rate for the week she was out of the country.

As an aside, Jurys Inn Heathrow is an excellent hotel - bright, modern and stylish, and with all the essential facilities available that you could possible need as an airport traveller. I also noticed quite a few families stopping at this hotel. Jurys, it would appear is very popular with families, not only because of the facilities, but because of the generous space in the guest rooms. Maybe something you would not notice if you were travelling alone, but if you are a couple with a bunch of kids you certainly would appreciate it. And let's admit it ...... some hotels in the city offer claustrophobic closets to their guests which insead of holding brooms and vacuum cleaners have graduated to become part of the bedroom inventory.

I would say, next time you you need car parking at Heathrow Airport, and especially if you are staying overnight, then take a look at the Jurys Inn reasonable alternative to the usual high charges.

WWE in The O2 Arena - Not everybody loves John Cena

WWE is headed for the O2 Arena on the 18 April, 2011 with what will hopefully be a stunning action packed show. Dedicated fans will expect to see their wrestling heroes in fearsome form with a display of spectacular moves that will pack enough power to send opponents flying head first out of the ring.

And what's this with John Cena? The kiddies love him and will cheer for him like mad. Not so much the adults though, many of whom harbour a quite wish that John Cena would be propelled through the canvas for a meeting with the cement floor of The O2. Am I being unkind? I don't think so. I am just relating the facts. Adult fans are fed up to the teeth of John Cena and can't wait for a career ending finish that would permanently take him off the scene.

What WWE needs is an end to predictability and a return to the era of past heroes. Yep. What' s needed now is someone of the calibre and class of JBL. Can you imagine the welcome?

Guaranteed, I'll be there on the night in the company of a small gang of committed wrestling fans who despite their age have far more expertise than me. They will probably be on the John Cena side: I'll be the lonely voice in the opposite camp. I'll be the guy - if I'm brave enough - holding the John Cena sign ....... it will be in the shape of an arrow and I'll have it pointing towards the ground, and it will read: 'John Cena - This Way.'

Some things set you thinking.

I met up with one of my good friends in Mayfair the other evening. Naturally, I don't need an excuse to take a drink or two. Whenever I meet up with this good gentleman, it's a plan. He instinctively started to steer towards a pub. I gently diverted our course to my preference - as always, a good, welcoming hotel.

Now there are many good hotels in Mayfair,and tonight we chose one of the best ...... The Chesterfield. One class hotel with staff who merit an award for their helpful attitude.

Soon we were happily ensconced and my friend was unhappily relating his ongoing misfortunes with his wife. With a take on Rumpole, he refers to his wife as 'she who must be considered'. Once passionately in love with his chosen life-partner, her former virtues have now dimmed into profound darkness, and her previously hidden vices have surfaced into a demonic form that would do credit to a Hammer horror. My friend's life is like a radio receiver stuck on a single channel that unremittingly broadcasts an unending diatribe of moaning, complaint, whinging, accusation, derision, sarcasm and backbiting.

He is totally fed up.

Still, he retains his innate good nature. He says to me - seriously - that if he wins the Lotto he will take me on a holiday with him to Antartica - at his expense. I say nothing, but I guess that suggestion of destination Antartica is because that is about as far away as he can get from his wife.

Then he suddenly says: "You know this Royal wedding next month? Well, Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting married on April 29th. Do you know what else hapened on April, 29th ...... ?

"Okay. It is the same date that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun got married - April 29th. The following day they both topped themselves."

I thought for a moment. I wondered ..... have we a reason to be worried?

Then he said, looking a little deflated: "I was married on April 29th . If on April 30th I had taken a cyanide capsule and a bullet in the head, I think my married life would have been short, but sweet. Instead, marriage has been a slow-release poison without the benefit of a quick execution shot.

"I am never going to forget that date - and the reason has nothing to do with the Royal wedding."

Boyzone Brother Tour in the O2 Arena

Boyzone last toured in 2009, but their current Brother Tour is proving a wonderful success. The group have so many loyal fans who are delighted to have the chance to see the boys live again at various venues in the UK and Ireland. New tracks from their recent album and many of the the old favourites make up a great evening's entertainment. They also promise some surprises along the way, and I think that has already happened. The Cardiff gig is reported to have been a blast.

The Langham London - an exceptional hotel

I had reason to visit The Langham London today

and really it is one fine hotel. I have to say, I don't care where you are staying - if you are in the area, make a point of dropping in to see this exceptional hotel. It's the atmosphere, I think .... or perhaps it's the historic associations that make this place special. When you consider some of the famous names that stayed here: Mark Twain, Dvorak the composer, Oscar Wilde, Haile Selassie, Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill from a long list of luminaries.

The Langham also featured in some of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle and in the James Bond movie 'Golden Eye'.

It has that tangible sense of the old Victorian Grand hotel with it's calm period splendour and air of fine elegance. This should be no surprise, I suppose. The Langham is the genuine article. It dates from 1865.
Its renowned Palm Court tea rooms is reputed to be the place of origin for the tradition of afternoon tea. And as far as that tradition goes, it still excels. A fact acknowledged indeed by The Tea Guild which awarded the Palm Court the accolade of Top London Afternoon Tea 2010.

I have had tea here, and it was certainly special. But I don't always come for tea. It is hard to describe what draws me. I just like hotels in general, I guess. But this hotel in particular ......... ?

Ah well. I just love the place. I come here quite often, but not often enough. Which is sad.

Really, you will have to see for yourself. Make a point if you are around Regent's Street, and drop in. It's not just the tea that's good. It's the experience.

The King's Speech - Oscar is listening and will be convinced

Well, the question is will Colin Firth land an Oscar for his triumphant performance in The King's Speech. He missed out before for A Single Man, but prospects seem brighter for his superb, outstanding portrayal of the temperamental King George VI and his struggle in overcoming a crushing speech impediment.

The reluctant monarch has to endure the oppressive demands of his position to speak publicly to a country at war, and to do so with the handicap of a dreadful stammer. Lionel Logue played by Geoffrey Rush is the speech therapist engaged to address the problem. He uses his unorthodox techniques with the initially unimpressed royal and the film hinges on the incredible relationship between these two men working intensely together towards what was ultimately a successful goal. Through Logue's persistence and innate ability, the King found his courage and eventually his voice.

I went to see this film on a great night out in Bloomsbury, and it was clear from the audience response that everyone was totally enthralled with this magnificent movie and the individual performances.

If there is any justice, Colin Firth will get that deserved Oscar: the movie likewise. Much admired - to put it mildly - after his stunning performance as Mr. Darcy in the most wonderful version ever of Pride and Prejudice, it would only be right that he achieves the ultimate recognition.

It was the role that made the nation, or the female part of it more precisely, to fall in love with him. Like Elizabeth Bennett did eventually, there were many thousands of female admirers who dreamed that they too would come under his powerful magnetism, would succumb at the well of his animal attraction, desired that they too would rest content for everymore under a man who would always be in a position of thrust over them - dominant, desiring, demanding ...... God! Where am I going with this?

Anyhow. He has got the BAFTA. Now Oscar is glancing perceptibly in his direction. As indeed he should. Now let's keep our fingers crossed.

So our dear Prime Minister David Cameron has bit the bullet on the controversial issue of multiculturalism, calling it a failure that has had disastrous results. He said it was forcing people to live separate lives, apart from each other and apart from the mainstream. In the public services, it meant all information had to be translated into numerous languages to cater for numerous people who go about their daily lives without ever having to learn English.

Speaking about forced marriages, Cameron said that in Bradford, schoolgirls under the age of sixteen have simply disappeared from school. Nobody knows where they are; and with little investigation – despite the fact that it is likely that they may have been drugged, imprisoned, kidnapped and forced into an unwanted marriage on the other side of the world.

Sorry. One moment. Just paying for a pint here .....

He said the threat of terrorism must be confronted by taking on the ideology of Islamist extremism at home. He also cautioned that a clear distinction must be made between the religion of Islam and the political ideology of Islamist extremism.

Well, I am thinking - this is going to get a fairly strong reaction. That last point, of course, is very valid. The distinction must be made between the religion and the extremist elements within Islam who want to send suicide bomber out into UK cities to kill innocent people. Much the same, I suppose, as we would draw a distinction between the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England, and extreme elements within these churches who would similarly want to send suicide bombers out to blow themselves up and kill innocent people here in the UK. Except, of course, neither the Catholics nor the Protestants have shown any interest up to now in fostering a belief among their followers that they should 'go forth, and detonate.'

Actually, should we draw another distinction there. You know, the fact that no other church in Britain except Islam has amongst its adherents mad religious fanatics who cheer on suicide bombers in their pursuit of martyrdom, who want to kill themselves and whoever is around them within the defined context of efficient public transport.

Is there a difference there? Enough to make a distinction between Islam and other religions? Actually, I hadn't thought of this question before now.

While I'm trying to figure it out, one other thought crosses my mind on the issue of multiculturalism. One point of controversy that keeps raising its head at periodic intervals is the question of the burqa. France and Belgium have instituted bans against the wearing of the burqa in public, and similar moves are afoot in other countries.

Here in Britain, I think the general feeling is one of accommodating differences. Do we really want government intervention into every small aspect of our lives?

Sorry again. No .... you have to go outside to smoke. Yes, just outside the door. They changed the law quite some time back. (I thought everybody knew this by now, even our tourists).

As I was saying, do we need it - government intervention, or government interference as some would call it into the petty affairs of everyday life. If I go into a government office and get to talk to an official who happens to be wearing a black bag over his head, is that going to raise my hackles. Not on your life. It's his choice. His point of view (if he is able to see out of it). And anyway, I don't mind talking to an old bag -- I've been talking to one at home for years.

Many Muslim women in Britain will say that they should have the freedom to choose what they wear. Women who are converts to Islam are particularly vociferous. They will assert that it is up to women themselves to decide as a right on their own attire without being dictated to by the state. These Muslim women, I am sure, would be the first to speak out and defend the right of western women to choose what they would wear if they were visiting Saudi Arabia or Iran. Yep. Short tops, low-rise jeans, uncovered heads and midriff exposure. Maybe even some navel piercing. The Muslim states may object, but isn't it good to know that there are Muslim women here in the UK who would speak out loudly for the rights of western women to choose what they would want to wear. You see. It works both ways.

Well, what does any of this matter? I suppose not for me at the moment. I am cosseted here in the comfort of the bar in the Regency Hotel in South Kensington. Iraq had the human shield. The US had the missile shield. I on the other hand feel safe behind my shield of robust beer glasses - a veritable bulwark against the cares and troubles of the world. Reality is firmly repulsed on one side, and rational thinking reduced on the other.

In which case, I will contentedly leave the awkward issues surrounding multiculturalism for David Cameron to sort out. He will be the one to lead us out from under the darkness of the burqa, and a fascinating spectrum of related multicultural problems, to the light of a new unicultural Britain. I am at one with that.

Eating Out in Knightsbridge

I visited a truly excellent restaurant last night in what some might say are the swank surroundings of Knightsbridge. I hadn't time to notice. It was a case of late in, late out, and preoccupation drove the elegance of the area out of my head. Normally, my pace would be more sedate and I would take time to appreciate the environment, the people and the happenings around me.

Last night, I was meeting up with someone for dinner - the wife was left at home - and I only cared about getting a good table and hopefully a better meal. Eating out in London is one of the great pleasures of living in this city, as much for the diversity as for the mostly - but not always - divine food.

For the London visitor, I would recommend some culinary exploring. It is something of a journey of discovery finding your way around a big city through its spread of eateries and multivarious offerings of good dining. I would say it is as much part of a London visit as going to see 'The Mousetrap' or Madame Tussauds ... and every bit as pleasurable. The only thing: be selective, but at the same time adventurous. Remember, you are exploring.

The friend I was meeting was there before me, and I was conscious and more than a little apologetic for my tardiness. But he has a good heart and is forgiving. Although, mind you, his looks somewhat belie his good nature. He is tall, imposing looking - military almost - mercenary almost - and one of these unfortunate guys who looks distant and unfriendly, but is, in fact, infinitely kind. At times too, he takes on a look of lethargy - maybe its my company - but he is on the contrary, alert and mentally astute.

My friend is actually a respected businessman with years of experience of the Middle East. With present events there so much in the news, he provided me with some insight into what is happening in Egypt at the moment. Interestingly, he told me that the popular revolt in Egypt meant not only the end of the regime there, it was also the beginning of the end for Israel. Although, he did say that this would be a slow process of demise - a death watch possibly over many decades, but with the same inevitable outcome. He said this without any malice towards Israel or the Israeli people, but simply as a matter of analysis. I was fascinated by his views, but didn't feel equal to contradicting him with my poor experience of foreign affairs .... and really what he was saying made good sense to me. A case of one more hound soon to be back on track with the rest of the pack, in pursuit of the weakening hare.

That is one extra ingredient in a good meal .... good conversation. They say it helps the digestion, and I believe that's true. And on this occasion, here in the good company of my friend, I was delighted we had got the nice quiet table I was hoping for earlier in the evening. Maybe it's just me, but it makes for natural conversation that is not in anyway self-conscious.

The reason I say that is because I recall one blighted evening out in a Soho restaurant with my darling wife. It was her birthday. I had intended it to be romantic and had chosen the occasion to talk to her about something special - a surprise which I hoped would delight her. We ended up seated in a quiet alcove which had just about enough decent room for the two tables that had been pressed into the space. As it was, quiet didn't matter as the place was virtually empty on what was a rather inclement night.

But it was to this vacant table next to us, out of all the tables in this near deserted establishment, that the waiter decided to direct a single diner to sit. Lovely. Now there were three of us cocooned in a space the size of a lift looking out over a vista of empty tables - the two of us and the stranger.

As the night went on, I found myself developing an irrational irritation with our near neighbour. Every move, sound or look was a small source of annoyance. Every minute sign of his existence bore in on me. After a time, I realised I was slowly coming to dislike this complete stranger - and for no good reason. After all, this poor individual had done nothing wrong, only to sit where he had been put by the unthinking waiter. If I was going to strangle anyone at the end of the night, it should be the waiter, not this unknowing innocent who had been unwittingly intruded upon us.

But seriously, what really had me riled was that my plan to surprise my wife with my special news would now not happen. I decided just to forget about it for the moment. I'd tell her later, and concentrate on the food for now. So for the rest of the meal both of us ate, and talked, and enjoyed ourselves. But even though I had decided to forget about our dinner guest, I had for the duration this nagging sense in the back of my head that, on a reverse take of the one-man-show, we were performing to a one-man-audience.

In truth, it is just me I suppose. I'm over sensitive and it was a public space. He probably didn't listen to a word we said. Probably .... But, there again ? No. Never mind. It's just me.

Anyhow, there were no such problems here in Knightsbridge, and after finishing what was a lovely meal I walked a little with my friend towards The Capital Hotel where he was staying during his few days in London. During our short walk I observed people leaving some of the other notable restaurants in the vicinity, and I hoped that they had as enjoyable a time as I had that evening.

A good restaurant isn't hard to find in Knightsbridge. There are quite a few. But instead of going through a list, you might like to look at Squaremeal which is a website with comprehensive advice and information on restaurants and pubs in London.

For those who might worry about what I mentioned at the start, that the wife was left at home. Don't worry. It was not a sign of neglect. I wouldn't be let away with it. It was purely her choice. And if there's a choice to be made between me and her favourite TV programme, then there is no choice.

St. Pancras International and King's Cross

In a rush to St. Pancras station to meet a very good friend arriving from Paris. It really is a first class facility for travellers to or from the continent, and it is somehow so nice to make the trip by train. It's old style, I suppose - travelling by train. But there is certainly nothing old or dated about Eurostar.

St. Pancreas itself is a station from where you can get connections easily for onward journeys, including travelling through King's Cross or Euston. If you need to stay overnight convenient to Eurostar there are plenty of good hotels in the vicinity.

Many travellers coming to London for the onward trip on Eurostar choose to stay in hotels near St. Pancras International and King's Cross ..... time and convenience being the principal factors.

As for time, I'm out of it now.

Sherlock Holmes Museum

Ah, Yes. I just love Sherlock Holmes. Okay. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I am a devotee. A Scandal in Bohemia, The Naval Treaty, The Six Napoleons ... love them all.

That's what brings me down to the intriguing Sherlock Holmes Museum here in famous Baker Street; and for those that might not know, virtually just around the corner from Madame Tussaud's.

It's not a grand museum by any means. In fact, it is quite a modest museum that occupies only three floors of a London townhouse, but for fans of the great fictional detective it has a magnetic attraction.

Being here has started me reflecting on which actor best portrayed Holmes on film and TV. In my view, it is easily between Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. Both were great; both were likeable in the part. Both had a unique and distinct style. But which was best, most like Holmes?

Choosing the definitive Holmes is not so easy. Not say quite as clear-cut as devining the merits of the various Miss Marples, where Joan Hickson is without a doubt the definitive Miss Marple ..... so much so that I can hardly bear to look at any of the recent incarnations. Yet, despite that, I also loved Margaret Rutherford in the role. Admittedly, she wasn't true to the Christie character, but she brought her natural verve and personality into everything she done - and she was hugely enjoyable.

By the same token, even though I would give the nod to Jeremy Brett as the definitive Holmes, I always enjoyed Basil Rathbone in the person of Conan Doyle's greatest creation. Brett had all the quirky and idiosyncratic apsects covered: Rathbone provided more command and calm reassurance. How? I think it was the voice.

So back to the museum. Well I've been here several time before, so on this occasion it will have to be a quickie ... but a meaningful one. Essentially the museum deals with everything relating to the great detective, and when you enter the famous address of 221B Baker Street, it really is a shift back in time. They have done a wonderful job recreating Holmes old study as it was with all the period features, furniture, decor and oddments. Holmes's personal belongings are around ...... deerstalker hat, violin, magnifying glass and calabash pipe. You are likely to run into the great man himself - as well as Dr. Watson. It's a wonderful atmosphere .... created, but feeling authentic.

If you are visiting London, you will probably be in Marylebone at some point, if only to visit Madame Tussauds. So it is easy to make a quick visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Not everyone will like it. I read a comment from one young visitor who said it was only like visiting an old batchelor's flat. Which reminded me of the old lady who said of her visit to Switzerland, that she would have enjoyed the scenery had it not been obstructed by all the high mountains.

If you're a fan, you will like this, and even if your not you will still find it interesting to get a sense of bygone times and a snapshot of how some people used to live; and specifically old batchelor Holmes. The museum has a small shop where you can get your very own deerstalker hat from amongst a variety of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia. Who'd be without one?

Leaving the Sherlock Holmes Museum, I would mention that I intend to finish this post in the same way I intend to finish all my posts. That is, with a recommendation for a nice pub, a good restaurant and a quality hotel that is to be found in or around the area I am writing about. That way, if you are in the area, you have some lead, and can take your choice to visit one or all. Depending I suppose on what you may need at the time - a quite drink, a good meal or a pleasant hotel for the night.

One footnote to the Sherlock Holmes Museum .......... It appears that Dame Jean Conan Doyle, the daughter of Sir Arthur, disapproved of the idea of the Sherlock Holmes Museum. She felt that it was inappropriate that a fictional character should be the principal feature of a museum. It is a view, and one can see her point. But there again, Mickey Mouse is a fictional character, and we still have Disneyland.

It's best to begin - when you have no other choice

This is not a good day to begin. Beginnings should happen in the right circumstances, and these are certainly not the right circumstances. Last night was the occasion of the engagement of one of my wife's work colleagues, and also an occasion of unforeseen over-indulgence. Drink – much drink – flowed freely, and now I am dealing with the sad outcome of that excess.

Needless to say, I know many people – better mortals than I – who would be completely unaffected by the proverbial skinful. The problem is, I don't usually do excess.

Well, things don't always work out as sweet as we would like, so what can't be cured must be endured. As it happens, today I am charged by the site administrator to start this blog, with the intention that I should provide some helpful information for visitors to our wonderful city which they will in turn find useful, memorable even, and place them at some positive advantage as they explore the delights of our fine metropolis.

So for the future - but definitely not today - I will do my best to give some brief and useful information on the city's many attractions, and at the same time give a mention of a good restaurant, a class pub, and of course one of our fine London Hotels. Naturally, the emphasis will be on hotels which is our specialty, and when possible, I will alert you to to some of the best hotel deals available at the time of writing. That's a good idea, I think. Who will object to saving money when there are always better things to spend it on - drink not being one of them. Anyway, that's the way I feel about it today. Tomorrow I may have a slightly changed perspective.
