King's Cross and St. Pancras

Over from King's Cross station you find St. Pancras station which in its own way is a little part of London's history. It is now well known as the terminal for the impressive Eurostar service which has opened up a convenient and swift gateway to the continent. Travel time to Paris is only 2 hours and 15 minutes with Eurostar and offers passengers a stylish, relaxing and pleasant way to travel to the French capital.

King's Cross St. Pancras tube station serves both St. Pancras and King's Cross station, and is a major hub for Underground and mainline connections. With the large passenger numbers that converge on this transport network, quite a number of people plan overnight stays in the vicinity of the stations. Understandably, where travellers from out of London need to connect with the Eurostar or another mainline destination, it is a convenient choice to book into one of the excellent hotels near King's Cross station. It is obviously the sensible option when you don't want to exhaust yourself outright with the demands of long travel.

Whether your stay here is planned or brought about by disruption to services - it can sometimes happen - you may find yourself with time to spare to allow you to explore the immediate area. If that should arise, don't worry - there are plenty of diversions to fend of boredom. A quick walk around, and you will easily discover many inviting restaurants and pubs close by. It is always good to know that at least you won't go short of fine food and drink should that take your fancy.

Also nearby is the British Library where you can stroll in and view a copy of Magna Carta from among a colossal choice of 14 million items stored on 400 miles of shelves. You could be some time, I guess. But don't led the oddly austere facade put you off. This excellent institution is pleasantly inviting on the inside, and as the repository of the national archive it is packed floor to ceiling with a myriad of written treasures that go to the deep heart of this nation. Its feature exhibitions and galleries are certain to impress, and even if you have landed here by accident rather than design you will be no less pleased.

Away now from King's Cross and St. Pancras to this post's special promotion -

Time for thoughtful moments - Valentine's Day in London

Let's not forget that Valentine's Day is coming up. Does anyone know anymore whether it is Cupid or commercialism that drives us into an annual spree of exchanging gifts, flowers, chocolates and cards. Well, let's pretend it is that mysterious romantic side to us that somehow puts us under the influence ... and of course that has also become another feature, especially with the younger set.

I will do what I always do ... put the commercial end of it out of my mind and with a little old fashioned sentiment spend some thougthful moments getting a small gift for the one I love. If anything, Valentine's Day is just a little prompt to me on this one day every year to give a few moments of affectionate consideration to the special person in my life. It is simple in a sense, but it is the one bit of sense I can see in it. If someone else is making money on the back of my feelings, then so bit it. In the end, I am grateful that they reminded me to remember.

For all hopeless romantics who might like look at last minute hotel offers in London, check out the current deals below. In my view, a weekend break in the capital would be just as good a present for Valentine's Day as an expensive perfume or pricey jewellery. I know that people associate Paris or Rome with romance, but London has it's own very special atmosphere, and if we were to go into it, no slouch either when it comes to some great romantic stories.
