I stayed in a hotel in Glasgow last
week at the invitation of a good friend. It was an hotel experience
that after just one day left me wondering just how good a friend he
was to me.
That's unfair, I know. He hadn't
planned to place me in a carnival creation of mediocrity and
inefficiency - but he had, and I am blaming him.
From my first steps into the welcoming
foyer .... a moment now while my tongue twists in my mouth at the
thought of the word 'welcome'..... I knew that matters promised to
get a whole lot worse. I was not to be disappointed, and my
expectations were fully rewarded in the bleakest possible sense.
No point going through a lengthy litany
of dissatisfaction and astonishment at all that was wrong with this
hotel. If I were to do so it would merely be some form of
catharsis whereby I could unburden my seared consciousness of its
painful recollections. Actually, pre-senile dementia has one thing
going for it ... the loss of memory for recent events. In the case
of this unnamed hotel, such misfortune would be a blessing.
Glasgow has much to recommend it, but
certainly not an hotel that would be classed as an atrocity against
civilians if it were run by terrorists. I assume it's not.
Deep breath - and I am so very glad
to be back in London. And although I can think of many cheap London hotels here, they are cheap in the way of price, not quality. Next
time in Glasgow, I will be more discerning.
Swiftly then to our current feature
offer where, as always, you can rely on finding an excellent
hotel.
