If you are intending visiting the
Natural History Museum during your London visit you will have the
opportunity to see the museum's evocative exhibition on Scott's
Last Expedition to Antarctica. Hailed as a hero, he died in heroic
fashion in an endeavour that gripped the soul of the nation due to
the dramatic and doomed nature of Captain Scott's fatal quest for the South
Pole. Ultimately, it was the Norwegian Roald Amundsen who gained the
“reward of priority” while the British attempt ended in failure.
But it was a glorious failure - one that drew admiration, respect
and sympathy for the scale of the effort and the enormity of the cost
that these men paid with their frozen bodies.
The exhibition runs up to the 2nd
of September, and as well as seeing many of the specimens and
artifacts from the polar expedition there is also an amazing
life-size recreation of Scott's hut which even to this day is still
extant in Antarctica.
